Probably every single one of us has at one time or another gotten the admonition from a doctor, “You’ve got to get your calcium for strong bones!”
This is outright falsehood has the potential to destroy your health.
Calcium hardens concrete. Excess calcium also hardens everything in your body—except bones, which it can actually make more brittle. Osteoporosis is caused by the loss of minerals from bones, not just the loss of calcium.
Yes, calcium is an important mineral. Everyone needs it. But – and this is the big “but”– we need it in the correct proportions top a dozen or more other minerals that contribute to bone health and to many other aspects of overall health.
Never take a calcium supplement alone for stronger bones, or for any other reason, as far as we can tell. In fact, there is so much calcium in the foods we commonly eat (primarily dairy products and added calcium in everything from juices to cereals and protein bars), most of us are already overloaded even before we think of taking a supplement.
In the best of all worlds, this dietary calcium and the calcium supplements our doctors insist we take, cause a mineral imbalance that can have disastrous results.
Several studies have linked calcium to an increased risk of heart attacks and death from heart disease.
Why? Because excess calcium in the arteries is doing exactly what it does to concrete: hardening it. Wow!
Think of what that excess calcium floating around in your bloodstream might be doing to other tissues that are supposed to be soft—like the lenses of your eyes, the cartilage in your joints and the fragile tissues of your brain.
Basic biochemistry tells us this, but most doctors are still stuck on The Calcium Lie. They are doing irreparable harm to their patients by being too foolish and stubborn.
Now a complete ionic mineral supplement, that’s another story entirely. Almost all of us are minerally deficient or minerally unbalanced. Howe can you know this? The only real way to know is to have a hair tissue mineral analysis (HTMA for short). Here’s where you can get one, but only if you live outside New York state. Sorry, friends, but your state legislature, in all of its ignorance, has bowed to other lies and makes it illegal for you to get an HTMA, even if you do it by some circuitous route.
The data shown in a few small clippings of your hair will tell you if you are among the tiny percentage of people who need calcium. It is highly likely that you do not need calcium, but you need some other minerals.
How to get minerals in the right balance?
Interestingly, natural unrefined sea salt has all the minerals we humans need in exactly the correct proportions. Pretty cool, huh? Look for salt that has a reddish color and perhaps little dark flecks in it. Products labeled “sea salt” alone are just about as nutritionally barren as table salt, but that’s a subject for a future entry.
Oh, and your doctor told you that you have to cut back on sodium because of high blood pressure? That’s the Sodium Lie. More about that in the future, but we’ll tell you right now that sodium restriction is incorrect for 90% of the population.
Your doctor will undoubtedly argue with you when you tell him about the Calcium Lie and the Sodium Lie. If you really want to do yourself –and your doctor’s other patients– a favor, a copy of the last paragraph of The Calcium Lie 2 might just do the trick.
